Wireless Broadband – Thoughts for Reliance [Mukesh Ambani] for BWA / LTE

May 3, 2011 · Filed Under Broadband, IP, Telecom · 2 Comments

Mukesh Ambani maybe the richest and the most powerful businessman in India. However, he is a miserable failure in the context of Telecom business. Mukesh subsequently gave control of the same to his younger brother and you know what the current fate of Reliance Communications is.

Reliance Industries, the Oil & Gas company has PAN India Wireless Broadband Access license. However, this time around I am of the opinion that Mukesh Ambani must not go solo like he has done in the past and tasted failure when it comes to consumer facing business [ Wireless & Retailing]. Reliance uses its Money Power and disrupts the space but is not agile with what the market forces Read more

Tata Photon+ TV – Triple Play towards Reality + Content Vs Network

December 14, 2009 · Filed Under Broadband, IP, Mobile · Comment

In an interview to IT Magazine in Jan-08, I had said that Triple Play in India was more of Hype as it was mostly restricted to selected few. However, Tata Photo+ TV powered by EVDO based Wireless Broadband network and Apalya / Mimobi TV is worth looking at, though it’ll take sometime for them to match the quality of Dish TV service providers. It is available in 69 cities across India with roaming facility and that’s quite a good number, in my view :-) Reliance, BSNL and MTS providing EVDO based wireless broadband services should start upgrading their networks as they are far behind Tata Photon+. Google WiMax / BWA Spectrum bid in India + Strategy for NextGen services

October 29, 2009 · Filed Under Broadband, IP, Mobile, Telecom · Comment

Business Standard set fire the speculation that Google may bid for Wireless Broadband Access / WiMax Spectrum in India. The reason why Google is considering this bid is that it does not want to be an ISP for sure. Google is more concerned about delivering Data Services / Apps on Mobile / PC and other emerging convergence devices.

Going forward,  VoIP Long Distance Calling would have been one of the most sought after app, however with 50 paise / minute this may not make much sense as I’ll definitely opt for a dedicated connection. But Google looks at it differently, they’ll offer bouquet of services using VoIP -[Google Voice] Read more

Fon WiFi Routers go Web 2.0 Savvy – Fonera 2.0N

Apart from writing on the Indian Telecom space, I like innovation and here is one such product that makes me write about it with a WoW feeling. At first in 2006, Fon / Foneras[ WiFi Spot] was to have FREE WiFI network. The startup is backed by Valley’s most innovative company – Google.

I have version of their router which is semi-intelligent [ has some connected interactive features] However, Fonera 2.0N is much more than that and is closely mapping Web 2.0 successful applications. Read more

CII + IMRB Research – 98% YoY Broadband Growth for 5 years – 214 mn subscribers Target

September 17, 2009 · Filed Under Broadband, IP, Telecom · Comment

CII + IMRB along with industry partners conduct Connect200* conference every year. The theme this year - India 2009-2014: Broadband Roadmap for Inclusive Growth [Inclusive Growth, aha! reminds me of India is Shining LOL]. Chandrajit Banerjee of CII and Manoj Kohli of Bharti Airtel are the Chairpersons leading this Cloud Nine revolution. Mr. Kohli is surely quixotic in his vision :-)

The funny part is the report acknowledges that India will fall short of 20 mn connections by 2010 and yet again sets another extremely ambitious target of 214 mn broadband connections by 2014. Here is the breakdown for Vision 2014, Read more

Wireless / Mobile Broadband – EVDO-HSPA-3G Vs WiMax – Will the War Intensify with Spectrum Auction ?

August 17, 2009 · Filed Under Broadband, IP, Mobile · Comment

With increasing pressure in Wireless Voice segment, Telcos are now shifting their attention to data services starting with Broadband where ARPU / Month is  ~4 times than Voice. I would like to do a status check on the available Wireless / Mobile broadband technologies in India and their adoption by Telcos and the results they’ve tasted in the market place.

Reliance Communications started the broadband over WiMax revolution in India 2 years ago followed by Tata Communications / Indicom and both seem to have had tough time. Both of these roll outs have happened on 802.16d while the current WiMax spectrum auction is for 802.16e. Tata Communications has mere 50,000 subscribers on its 1,000 base station WiMax network spread across India. RCom declines to give exact subscribe numbers citing competition as the reason but I am inclined to assume Read more
