Before I write about the M&A in Indian Telecom, I’d like to write a little more on the evolution of Wireless Data / Broadband services.
Investment Bankers and Strategists at Telecommunication companies are pitching that Data as the next Big driver for the sector, especially with the advent of cheaper access devices. Let us study the Rise of Data as Percentage of Revenues for Telcos in Asia Pacific – Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, China and Malaysia. Airtel Result Analysis – SMS Rocking – 3G / 2G Data Revenues Pathetic
My apologies that I couldn’t write about the Airtel Conference Call Post Q2 results. However, here is an interesting piece of data which has caught everybody by surprise. Airtel gets 14.5% revenues from VAS of which 9.5% is from SMS. This means the remaining 5% includes VAS like CRBT, IVR, etc along with 3G Data Services.
Airtel also derives revenues from some of its services like ‘facebook on SMS’ and ‘twitter on SMS’ as SMS revenues. These can technically be seen as data revenues and should not be significant in the overall comparison.

GSM For Voice – CDMA for Broadband – Wireless Life of Indians
Indians have given a Thumbs Down to CDMA based Mobile Voice Service as they increasingly embrace the GSM Platform due to the friendly eco-system for consumers. India has 851 Mn Wireless Connections at the end of June-2011.
In June-2009 CDMA Mobile Connections commanded a 23% market-share which dropped to 17% in June-2010 and it further dropped to 13% in June-2011. During the same Period, GSM Connections have increased from 77% to 83% and then to 87% respectively. So the verdict is Final, CDMA eco-system is a miserable failure in India. Will Reliance Communications Roll Red Carpet to Mukesh’s RIL LTE-Broadband ?
Here is a very interesting development on the 4G LTE-Broadband front. Mukesh Ambani’s RIL had invited bids for Telecom Infrastructure [Fiber and Tower] and Economic Times journalists who spoke to insiders in the deal send feelers that Reliance Communications [RCom ]is probably the choice for RIL’s 4G LTE Broadband Rollout. RCom has fantastic dark fiber network as well as international connectivity through Flag Telecom now known as Reliance Globalcom.
