eBay India Launches Advertising
eBay India is booking ads for its website. You can place an ad on home / categories / search results page. This is not eBay’s Adcontext nor contextual nor behavioral advertising, but the old model of booking display ads. The site boasts of 2.5 million unique users and 30 million page views. eBay is taking this step due to lack of Auction based revenues in India.
eBay has banned its competitors [Online Shopping and Auction Sites] from placing ads. The only Ads that I saw were of John Players and Tata Sky Dish TV. John Players redirects to an exclusive eBay shop while Tata Sky takes you to their official website.
I was little curious about who was serving these ads and sniffing the packets, it was redirected through eBayObjects.com. eBayobjects DNS entries point to NS*.DOUBLECLICK.NET. So it is not Yahoo that is serving ads, but DoubleClick, a Google company is. If you visit http://in.ebayobjects.com/ you will notice that its a DoubleClick advertising server

2G License + Spectrum; Some Predictions come TRUE
Reliance Communications was the luckiest in this round of battle. DoT issued PAN India GSM license to RCom + HFCL + Shyam Tele. IT ministry also accepted the DoT’s guidelines for crossover of technology [GSM / CDMA]. Another blessing for Reliance communications is that the deal is effective in retrospective date which now make is the number one contender for GSM spectrum.
It’s now time for some self-praise. On the 27th of last month I had written,
This time GSM operators will be told to use better mix of GSM technology to make the best use of spectrum.
Additionally, I had written,
IT ministry will have no choice but to auction fresh spectrum….. fresh spectrum will be atleast thrice as more expensive….
I am right about recommendations being given to GSM operators. DoT has suggested that GSM operators have to squeeze in more number of subscribers per MHz of spectrum. Earlier they could walk away with 10MHz with mere 6 lakh subscribers, now an operator has to have 2 Million subscribers on his billing rolls to get 10MHz.
I am wrong about the Spectrum Auction, because they have ruled out auction of 2G spectrum. But I am hopeful, if 10% of 300+ applicants for the spectrum are genuine and really serious, then auction will be the only way out. However, companies like VaVasi Telegance should be encouraged because it is taking a different route.
I am partially right about spectrum being expensive. In a way of speaking, fresh spectrum is thrice as more expensive [Interpreting conversely, 10MHz for 0.6 Mn subscriber is now changed to 10MHz for 2 Mn subscribers] I am partially wrong because I was seeing Spectrum as an asset valuation into the stocks of Bharti Airtel and Idea Cellular, which is not going to happen now
This may discourage Indian Land Lords in the Telecom race who are Billionaires by virtue of holding land and not creating wealth like others did.
Stay tuned, the battle has just begun. Sunil Mittal maybe back in the driving seat at Qutab Ambience to save and grow the empire he built.

Yahoo’s affiliate / associate serving ads on Torrentz / illegal site
Networks worldwide struggled for years to get a truly competing product to AdSense. Om says that Yahoo’s Panama and search marketing is gaining some traction but I am still skeptical about the completeness of Panama.
Earlier, Yahoo bought 35% stake in Indian online advertiser – Tyroo. Looks like the rules of Yahoo’s game don’t apply to Tyroo
Yahoo clearly writes states in its Ad Page content guidelines, Copyright or trademark-sensitive products such as MP3 downloads, DVD backups or bootleg items as problematic content. Yet, Tyroo continues to freely serve ads to Torrentz.com, the Torrent search engine (screenshot). Hopefully someone from Yahoo will soon look into the issue and henceforth Do No Evil

Promote your blog on Rediff Classifieds

The spa* from Rediff has increased 3 fold after the Do Not Call registry went live. Here is one that I received just a while ago, Let more people read your blog and post comments, post an ad on Rediff P4C classifieds – FREE for 13 weeks.
Rediff wants to increase the content on its classifieds, which maybe a good idea if the blogs are about product reviews or services [otherwise its an open invitation for link spa*mers]. Thinking conversely, I think it would be a better idea to display content related classified ads on blogs
Check out some entries, many failed to link to their blog properly.

3G spectrum to be auctioned. Why not 2G ? Vavasi’s TD-SCDMA Application.
India is likely to allow all players[domestic + foreign] to bid for 3G spectrum, if auctioned. There is just enough spectrum to accommodate 4 operators for every circle. It has always been said that BSNL will get a back door assured entry provided they match the bidder. So the rest of the world will now compete for 3 positions
Coming back to the present spectrum, 2G, the officials have said that there will be no auction and the ones in the queue will be accommodated. 2 out of 300 applicants
Existing operators will get spectrum based on the old model – linked to the number of subscribers. In the light of these developments, Competition Commission has approached Telecom Authorities, Planning Comission, etc to auction the 2G spectrum in a suitable way thus making it a transparent deal. I am wondering where is the Telecom Watchdog now ? It was just chasing the Vodafone India [erstwhile Hutch dog]
As spectrum is already a scarce resource, we have no other option but to innovate. Mr. Maran lead the initiative for establishing telecom research institutes but I guess after his departure its just a piece of paper ? However, in one of the research notes I read about this little known company, Vavasi Telegence, which has applied for PAN India Unified Access License to provide telecom services using TD-SCDMA – a Chinese Technology. This technology is equivalent to 3G and operates in a different spectrum band which is not used by others. India should take this as a lesson from her neighbor and should try to develop new technology for Telecom services suitable for its citizens.
