National Do Not Call Registry of India is Live
The National Do Not Call Registry of India, an initiative by TRAI is Up and Running now. TRAI in a notification in early June had promised to take the registry live in 3 months. The NDNC Registry is hosted here.
The registry has an issue. If you subscribe to BSNL Landline, Airtel Mobile and Vodafone-Hutch-Essar Blackberry, then you have to register yourself with all the 3 operators separately and it will take 45 days to propogate to the NDNC Registry. You can register with your Telco by an SMS or through a web based interface. Here is a list of Do Not Call / Disturb Links for you to register of Telecom/Mobile Operators and Financial Companies. [Though registration with financial companies may not be needed any more if your Phone is in the DNC list]
A Tele-marketer in India is now obligated to become a member of this registry and download the list of subscribers who have opted out of Unsolicited Commercial Communication before making any calls. Consumers can file their complaint with the NDNC Registry here.

Great!
The NDNC Registry site (http://ndncregistry.gov.in/) itself is down now…
So much for the national initiative! I registered with airtel more than 45 days ago, and even today I get calls from banks like StanChart, ICICI, etc.
And now there’s no place to put up a complaint for the same!!!
I am a BPL Mobile User. I have already registered for NDNC. Do I need to register again on the website.
Consumers can’t register on the website, only Telemarketers can. Going by the recent meeting between TRAI and Telecom Companies, NDNC will take more time to stabilize, so kindly be patient.

Vodafone is charging money to activate the said service. I dont understand why TRAI has no control over the telecom companies which leverage a loophole in the policies made by the governing body.
[...] Am I Fu**ing insane asking to penalize the DoT / TRAI ? Well, you’ve read that right. The TRAI in its recommendation has proposed to fine the Telco carrying the unsolicited call. Telcos have no role to play as they are merely completing the call. [It is hard to believe that Telcos are selling consumer data as alleged by some. Get ready for bigger privacy problems if shortsighted people in TRAI authorize Location Based Services.] Even Tele-marketers are willing to comply by the National Do Not Call Registry. [...]
On 16th July 2008, at 11.51 hrs in the morning Recd a regular marketing Phone call from Country Club. Ms. Latha start to talk to me for marketing, when I enquired about the office address, she refused to give. I told her not to disturb again as she is not interested to tell her office address. She told me “Say Yes or No, Our duty to call every one for business. It is none of your business to advise me, not to call”. I told her as I have registered my phone number with DNC, you are not supposed to disturb me. She told me that the govt can’t do anything. “You are mad, don’t advise me”, she said. How this call center people talking to the customer for marketing. Her phone number: 9141-63065143. The company Country Club. Name Ms. Latha. I made a complaint to my telephone service provider “Airtel”, they told me that The Country Club not registered with the govt and they can not do anything. Any one tells me where to complaint? How to stop this unwanted calls?
I tried to register online complaint with Airtel site. But it is not working http://www.airtel.in/Common.aspx?path=0/107
Recived call from Relience Insurance for the third time having tel no. 011-45052522 (last call). Interestingly they have complete details about my vehicle insurance. Please guide how this could be protected? It is not possible every time to approcah Consumer Forum and face trial (more painful for an individual than that of a coporate). There should be some system by which such tele callers could be reported and with proper invetigation they need to be penalised. The fund recovered may be used for social causes.
There should be some similar provision for SMS people too. It is increasing day by day.

It is really sickening. I wonder if this is just a namesake law with no teeth. First we are asked to register with TRAI. Then we have to register with the service provider. Today I received an unsolicited call – not the first – from Barclays bank, offering a free credit card. The caller was one Shwetha. She insisted that I listen to her. When asked that I would like to speak to her manager about the call as I was already registered with NDNC register – she banged the phone down. I then called my service provider – VODAFONE. This was the beginning of another nightmare…..first I speak to one guy who said that he could not do anything, he put me on hold for nearly 10 minutes (yes TEN full minutes) just to say this!!! I was directed to another customer care agent who says that she has answered all my queries and was very impolite. I am a corporate customer of Vodafone. Imagine what they would do to one who is not !!
