IT Minister Dayanidhi Maran who last week had hinted about boosting broadband intertent in India has made a public announcement at India Telecom 2006 that BSNL will kiss goodbye to 256 KBPs very soon and will move towards broadband internet at 1 MBPs. Well that’s a slightly over optimistic promise but if delivered, hats off to him. Indians (Bangaloreans) had access to 64 KBPs unlimited internet in 2001 which got bumped to 128 KBPs in 2003 and is currently 256-384 KBPs in most parts. So looking at this advancement, I am a bit skeptical about 1 MBPs unlimited pipe, but 512 KBPs by end of 2007 is certainly doable.
Mr. Maran also unveiled a 10 point plan – Vision 2010 in which he is adamant that companies make the best use of disruptive technologies like WiMax for broadband deployment.

Indian Telecom infrastructure has defied Moore’s Law. If in 2001 the speed available was 64Kbps, 72 months later or (6 yrs, by the end of 2006) we should have had 1024 Kbps, according to Moore’s law which says computing capacity doubles every 18 months.
After 18 months >> 64 X 2 = 128 Kbps in 2002 June
After 36 months >> 128 X 2 = 256 Kbps in 2003 December
After 54 months >> 256 X 2 = 512 Kbps in 2005 June
After 72 months >> 512 X 2 = 1024 Kbps in 2006 December
Has anyone noticed this or we are still patting back our own backs and living in the past.
well.. i’ve read some report that quoted a bsnl cheif saying that 2 mbps capacity is available and the speeds will be first put at 1mbps and then gradually increased to 2 mbps..
i kinda will take my time to believe if this really is true.. but.. again.. The minister din really have to promise anything and it wasn’t an election rally.. so.. i DO expect “something” to happen 🙂
