WiMax forum cautions Indian Govt

WiMax IndiaThe WiMax forum (closed forum, a lobby) has warned the Telecom Regulator that India may miss the bus on WiMax broadband if it fails to allocate the necessary spectrum in 2.5 to 2.69 GHz for these services. According to the Indian broadband wireless access policy, TRAI has set aside spectrum in the range of 3.3 – 3.4 GHz. Globally, 2.5 to 2.69 Ghz is the sought after channel for Wimax, which in India is in use for  applications like disaster warning, dissemination and radio networking. If India adopts a separate band, deployment costs could be higher. [Shed some light if you are an RF engineer]

Last month I wrote on 3G Vs WiMax in India and I feel WiMax is the technology we should adopt ASAP to increase broadband penetration in the country. I have also written separately to the captians of the telecom industry as licensing costs are far less than 3G. Adding to the woes of broadband users in India, Reliance Broadband has announced that they are holding on their rollout for consumers for few more quarters. Hopefully, spectrum issue will get resolved soon and pave way for broadband to be an utility in Indian homes 🙂
