It happens only in India ?
The Indian mobile subscriber base is growing at such a rapid pace(60% YoY) that it is soemtimes impossible to make calls from busy places like Mumbai’s Dalal Street or New Delhi’s Connaught Place during peak hours inspite of mobile operators making provisions for additional capacities. Thus people tend to carry two phones to keep connected.
GSM subscribers have a simple solution to their problem of carrying two phones. They can get an additional circuit added to their existing phone and can insert two SIM cards(Airtel & Hutch) as shown here for a Nokia 3310. Cost, mere Rs300
Depending on the modification, switching between service providers may require switching off the phone. But for the phone shown above, all you need to do is just press #3370 and if your existing carrier is Airtel it will automatically switch to Hutch and vice-versa. Oho Ya! No Bluetooth or Infrared to sync your address book as you can store on the same phone and access no matter who your carrier is.
India’s GSM subscribers base up by 68% in FY 2005-2006.

Taking a closer loook at quarterly growth rate, most of the subscribers were added in A – Circle (Maharashtra, Gujarat, A.P, Karnataka and T.N). A – Circle witnessed a growth of 20%, Metro – Circle witnessed a modest 12% growth and B – Circle witnessed a robust growth of 14.5% over their previous quarter.
Also in my earlier post, I had said that Spice had added 100,000 customers, while figures suggest that it is 113,137 customers in the states of Karnataka and Punjab
Indian online properties to get HOTTER!
Its just not that real estate in Bangalore/Gurgaon or the Mumbai stock exchange SENSEX touching new highs, but the Indian Internet properties are also getting hotter. India had approximately 40 Million Internet subscribers at the end of 2005, witnessing a growth of 54% YoY.
As reported in Business 2.0, good domains and domains that are misspellings of great Internet brands have a very high value. IndiaForum.com is one such domain which resembles a great and a popular discussion portal for Indians India-Forums.com . Vijay Bhatter founded India-Forums.com and has 36 Million pages views/month. Its Alexa ranking is 3294. IndiaForum.com a domain smiliar to India-Forums.com, was auctioned off last afternoon by Snapnames, which fetched a cool $4350(Indian Rupees 1,97,500). The buyer is Michael from Bethesda, Maryland. Considering SantaBanta.com’s move for a $13 Million IPO, which has Alexa ranking of 2181 and 40 Million page views/month, and falls in the same rank and file as that of India-Forums.com, Michael might have jut gota steal for his money. Is it time that Indian investors start thinking about investing in good domain names rather than Gold, Stocks and M.F.Hussein paintings
Is the Open-Wireless access gaining momentum in the west ?
After the open source software momentum is the open-wireless and free internet access for everyone gaining momentum in the west ? Earlier this year, Google invested in a lesser known company, FON. Fon was born in Spain and is being adopted in the US. Fon is also in talks with next generation metro network gear manufacturer, Tropos. Another NASDAQ listed company, Speedus, has floated a subsidary, WiBiKi (Wireless Ubiquity) to promote free and open internet access by making its softwarefreely available for your home routers. So very soon a Seattle resident can surf the net free of cost in NY without shelling out extra bucks at Starbucks
